We think it is time to head back to the science class to understand the effects of facial creams and treatments on skin. These treatments offer solutions to help to smooth, remove pigmentation marks and ensure beautiful glowing skin! The largest organ of the body, skin responds to touch, so it ‘s important to establish a daily routine morning and night cleansing and moisturizing , with a weekly mask.
Skin is comprised of three layers and the epidermis -which is the
uppermost layer sheds cells daily. This process can slow down due to age
and stress so cells accumulate on the surface causing dull,
dry and bumpy skin. Exfoliating regularly will help increase blood circulation
giving skin a glow noticeable within a few days. Retinol, AHAs , BHAs and Hyaluronic Acids – explained below are the buzz words.
Retinol based products are derived from vitamin A – one of the best vitamins for skin. An antioxidant it
protects the skin from free radicals
(ie., pollution and smoke), stimulates cellular renewal and repairs
damaged cells. Applied as a topical treatment Retinol acts quickly to
increase exfoliation bringing newer cells to the surface. Anti-aging, it
helps remove fine lines and wrinkles and also controls acne. Use Roc,,
Dr Brandt and Strivectin brands.
AHAs – stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acids, examples being lactic acid and glycolic acids. Best used for drier, sun damaged skins they work on the epidermis removing excess cells thereby making the skin look younger, fresher and brighter! Dermatologists use higher concentrations in chemical peels. However lower concentrations incorporated into products have been designed for use at home. Micropolish and Peel by Algenist is one to use.
BHAS are known as Beta Hydroxy Acids and contain salicyclic acid (a derivative of aspirin) and help to control problems associated with oily, spot-prone skin and can be combined with AHA treatments.
Hyalouronic Acids are found within our bodies but depletes as we age. Topical creams can help relax and plump out fine lines. It can be found in the form of masks, creams and even powders. By Terry has produced a Hyaluronic Hydra Powder that can be worn day and night over foundation or skin care, and provides a smooth skin base. Rodial do mask based treatments and moisturisers.
A word of caution, always follow the instructions on the bottle. It is imperative that a sunblock is used daily, reapplying as necessary as some treatments can increase photosensitivity to the sun. Some products should only be used at night and not during the day as they can cause pigmentation problems. Once you start looking after your skin, you will reap the rewards.
